Handwriting
Nick : What are you reading, Jenny ?
Jenny : I’m reading a book about handwriting. Did you know that your
handwriting can tell you about your character ?
Nick : No, I didn’t. What does the book say about my handwriting ?
Jenny : Yours is bigger than mine. Big writing means that you are friendly,
optimistic and ambitious. Look, here are some examples of
signatures. This one here shows that the writer is sporty because
there are lots of loops in it. That one at the bottom is very neat.
It means that the writer is calm and affectionate.
These three are examples of very small writing, which means that
you can concentrate well and are modest. Those on the next page
are examples of big writing, which means that you are ambitious
and not very tactful.
Nick : This is fun. What about Tom’s writing ? His has big spaces
between all the words.
Jenny : That means that he is careful and likes being alone.
Nick : And Amanda’s ? Hers has small spaces between the words. And
what about our teacher’s writing ? They are always complaining
about pupils’ handwriting, but theirs is something worse than ours.
Vocabulary :
character (n) the particular combination of qualities in a person
ambitious (adj.) having a strong wish to be successful, powerful or rich
optimistic (adj.) hopeful; believing that good things will happen in the
future
neat (adj.) tidy, with everything in its place
affectionate (adj.) showing feelings of liking or love
modest (adj.) not usually talking about or making obvious your own
abilities and achievements
tactful (adj. ) careful not to say or do anything that could upset
someone
