Brainstorming
Brainstorming is very useful when a group is trying to make a decision. It allows everyone to contribute ideas. Brainstorming is simple, but if you want it to be successful it is important to follow a few basic rules.
Here they are :
Get a large piece of paper and put it where everybody can see it. Sticking it on the wall is good.
Appoint one person to be the ‘ writer’. The ‘ writer’ writes the topic of the brainstorm on the piece of paper, e.g. in the centre or at the top.
People call out ideas and the ‘ writer ’ notes them on the piece of paper. You don’t have to write them in order but they must be easy to read. You can try to group the ideas together.
Here is some useful language to use when suggesting ideas : What about....., How about....., Let’s...., Why don’t we......., We should....
It is VERY IMPORTANT not to criticise or discuss ideas when people call them out. All ideas go on the paper without comment. It doesn’t matter if you agree or not at this stage. The most important thing is that people should feel comfortable giving ideas.
When people cannot think of any more ideas, you begin to discuss them. Give reasons why you think one idea is better than another.
