Grounded !
Stevie : No, I can’t go out with you to the movies. I’m grounded !
Jimmy : But it’s Saturday !
Stevie : It doesn’t matter. Jenny and I are not allowed to go out
for a whole week.
Jimmy : What did you do?
Stevie : We were supposed to stay home with Bobby when our parents
went to opera the other night. They don’t like him to stay home
alone because he’s only six years old.
Jimmy : So what happened?
Stevie : Well, Pete and Joan dropped by, and they were going to the
drugstore. Bobby didn’t mind staying alone and watching T.V.
We thought we would just sneak out for an hour or two and be
back before our parents got home.
Jimmy : And you stayed out late?
Stevie : No, we got back early. But our parents had a flat tire.
They missed the show and came home after we did. So there
you are !
Jimmy : That’s tough luck, Stevie.

Culture Note
Grounding is a common form of punishment for young people who disobey their parents. Grounding means that they are not allowed to go out, after school or on weekends, for a certain period of time. This could be from one day to a month or more, depending upon the gravity of offense. During that time, though, they must continue to go to school, to work if they have a job.
