Pocket Money
How old were you when you first started to get pocket money? How much do you get now? What do you spend it on? A recent survey asked thousands of teenagers these questions. Here are some of the conclusions.
Many children start to get pocket money between the ages of 7 and 9. In the UK, average pocket money for children aged 12-13 is around £2 a week. For children who are 14, the weekly average is approximately £ 3.
Around the age of 13, a lot of children spend at least half their pocket money on sweets. Girls also buy accessories, magazines and make-up. Boys buy more food and drink, computer games and CDs. Recently, teenagers have started spending more on mobile phone cards. Girls spend 40 % more on phone cards than boys.
Many parents give their children money when they help to do things like washing the dishes, cleaning their room or cutting the grass. And one curious fact: when they need extra money, most children prefer to ask their mothers, not their fathers. The survey did not ask why !
