Hitching a Ride
Mrs. Jenkins : Get in, Jimmy. Where are you going?
Jimmy : Thank you, Mrs. Jenkins. I’m going to the skating rink.
Are you driving that way?
Mrs. Jenkins : Not exactly. But what if I drop you off at the corner of Main
Street? It’s only a few blocks away.
Jimmy : That’ll be just fine, Mrs. Jenkins. Thanks a lot.
Mrs. Jenkins : Not at all. But be careful when you hitchhike, Jimmy.
It’s not safe with strangers, particularly at night.
Jimmy : Yes, I know, Mrs. Jenkins. I’m careful. Anyhow, tonight
Stevie’s dad’s going to drive us back.
Mrs. Jenkins : That’s good, then. But do be careful.

Culture Note
Most Americans live in the suburbs where schools, stores, movies, theaters, and even friends’ houses can be many miles away. Yet there is hardly any public transportation, so that many young people find it difficult to get around.
Sometimes a parent, a friend or relative will drive them where they want to go, or, if it isn’t too far, they can walk or bicycle. Hitchhiking, however, is a common way of solving the transportation problem, even for relatively short distances within the community. Most drivers are glad to give rides to local teenagers going in the same direction they are.
