Running the Rapids
Jimmy : Can you guess what I did on my vacation? I went on a rafting trip
down the Colorado River !
Gus : Through the Grand Canyon?
Jimmy : Yes, three days and three nights. Of course, we camped ashore
every evening.
Gus : How big was the raft?
Jimmy : Really big. There were eight people in mine>
Gus : Did you run the rapids?
Jimmy : That was the best part. We went full speed between these big cliffs
on a large rubber raft. There was foam and spray all around, and
we missed the rocks by inches!
Gus : Weren’t you scared?
Jimmy : I think everybody was a bit scared. But that was part of the fun.

Americans love the outdoors, and many choose to spend their vacation doing something adventurous in a natural setting: sailing , hiking long distances, going on canoe trips, climbing mountains.....
A popular vacation activity is going rafting. One of the best places for rafting is the Colorado River, particularly where it runs through the Grand Canyon. Several large rafts equipped with outboard motors and oars take groups down river. The days are full of excitement as the rafts run the rapids or float through beautiful scenery, and the nights are spent relaxing ashore in comfortable temporary camps.
