The Yangtze River
The Yangtze river in China separates the north of the country from the south. It is the longest river in China and the third longest in the world. Its source is in the east of the country and it flows about 6,400 km. to Shanghai, where it meets the East China Sea. It is important culturally, economically and industrially. One section, flowing through some gorges in Yunnan province, is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, three great rivers run almost parallel, although they are separated by high mountains.
There are nature reserves and places of scenic beauty in this area, which have a very rich range of plants and animals and areas of outstanding geographical features. The largest hydro-electric power station in the world is situated on this river at the Three Gorges Dam.
The completion of the actual dam took place in 2006 and already by April 2009, the power station had produced enough electricity to cover a third of the building costs. It has increased the navigational capacity, that is to say the number of ships that can use the river, and has reduced the danger of floods to areas below the dam, by storing more water. All in all, the Yangtze is a most impressive river.
