Vocabulary

1. Chinese zodiac wheel

The Chinese name their years after twelve animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar (Pig).

The year 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit.

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are cautious, calm, and gentle. They are good listeners, and they like beautiful things.

How do people prepare for Chinese New Year?

They clean their houses, buy new clothes, get haircuts, and pay off old debts.

2. lanterns

They are Chinese lanterns. They are made from paper and are hung above streets for Chinese New Year.

3. a red envelope (อั่งเป่า)

People put money in the envelopes and give them to children and young adults on Chinese New Year

4. The Lion Dance (เชิดสิงโต)

The Lion Dance is performed by a pair of dancers. They represent protection. Statues of lions are used to guard palaces and other buildings.

5. a Dragon Dance

The long dragon is made from silk and is attached to poles. The Chinese New Year dragon dance symbolizes the bringing of good luck and success in the coming year for all the human beings on earth.

6. firecrackers ประทัด

There are many opinions regarding the importance of Chinese New Year Firecrackers. One popular belief is that the noise will wake up the dragon that will fly across the sky to bring the spring rain for the crops.

Another belief is that the exploding noise of the firecrackers will scare away all evil spirits and misfortunes, preventing them from coming into the New Year.
