Attractions in Ubon Ratchathani
Ubon Ratchathani province is located in the north eastern Thailand bordering Laos and Cambodia. The approximate distance from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani by land is 629 km This province, relatively unknown to the most tourists has lot of natural wonders, cultural and historical items, rice fields, farming villages, silk producing shops, national parks for hiking and camping, etc.
How to go
Daily bus services ( both aircon and non-aircon ) leave at the Bangkok north eastern bus terminal (Morchit 2 ). Phone number: 936 1880, 936 0657. In Ubon please call (045) 241 831.
Rapid and express train services between Bangkok and Ubonratchathani are available. In addition, ordinary train services are also available daily. Bangkok central train station can be reached at phone numbers: 223 7010 and 223 7020.
Thai airways has daily flights. Please call at 280 0060 and 628 2000 in Bangkok. In Ubon please call at (045) 313 340 up to 44.
Attractions in the city
Wat Thung Sri Muang, located on Luang road was built in the reign of King Rama III of Bangkok. Within the temple, there is a north east style Buddhist sanctuary with beautiful muralsdepicting the way of living of Ubon people hundreds of years ago.
Wat Supatnaram, located on Somdet road was built in 1853 by Phra Phrom Raja Wongsa, the town ruler in the reign of King Rama IV of Bangkok.Blessed with shady trees, the temple is quiet and peaceful.
Wat Nong Bwa, located in the outskirt of the town on route 212, houses Phra Jedi Sri Maha Bo (an imitation of Buddhagaya pagoda in India) built in 1957.
Ban Kan Luang Open Museum, situated in Ban Kan Luang temple, has a lot of over 2000 years old archaeological remains.
Wat Ban Na Muang, situated in Ban Na Muang approximately 5 km from the town center, houses a strange Buddhist sanctuary built like the Suphannahong royal barge.
Attractions in Phibun Munksahan District
Kaeng Sa Pue is one of the most beautiful cataracts in Ubon Ratchathani. The word "Sa Pue" means "a serpent". It is in the Mun river near the district office, about 45 km to the east of Ubon city center, on the left hand side of highway 217. This beautiful cataract of natural rocks can be seen for half the year during the dry season. In the rainy season, it is covered with high water. There is a summer pavilion for visitors.
Attractions in Sirinthorn District
Sirinthorn Dam is located about 70 km east of Ubon city center along route 217. Accommodations are available at Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. Phone numbers: 436 3271 up to 2 in Bangkok.
Chong Mek Border, located about 89 km to the east of Ubon city center along route 217. This highway will be connected to the 38 km road in Laos leading to Pak Sae, which is a part of Asian highway.
Attractions in Khong Chiam District
Kaeng Ta Na National Park can be reached by two ways. One is by highway 2222. Along this route tourists get a beautiful sight of Kaeng Ta Na because more rock formations can be seen on this side. The other way is the route to the national park office along highway 217(Phibun - Chong Mek route) and then turn left to route 2173 for another 13 km. The total area of Kaeng Ta Na national park is 80 sq. km. It was proclaimed a national park in 1982. Located where Mun river flows into Mekhong, the
park features cliffs overlooking the Mekhong river and Laos. There are several stream rapids, waterfalls, trekking trails in Kaeng Ta Na national park. Bungalows are available near the park's headquarters. Only a small number of wildlife are said to exit in the park.
Tat Ton Waterfall, located inside the Kaeng Ta Na park, is on highway 2173 at about 6 km off route 217. The cool and clear waters is surrounded by forest.
Don Tana is a biggest cataract in the middle of the Mun river (inside Kaeng Ta Na park). It is a big stone platform lying across the Mun river, causing the water flow to take the form of beautifulwaterfalls.
Pha Taem National Park, located in the area of Phu Pha Lane was announced as a national park in 1991. On the cliff called Pha Taem, pre-historic paintings were found. The park is accessible by route 2112. Up to now, no accommodation is available.
Sao Chaliang, a natural rock formation inside Pha Taem park, is on highway 2112, at about 11 km from the park office on the route to Pha Taem. This mushroom like rock formation has fossils of sea shells, pebbles and sand grains. It is believed that this area had been a sea bed about a million years ago.
Pha Taem & Pha Kam (inside Pha Taem park) are on highway 2112 at about 98 km from Ubon city, or at 3 km further from Sao Chaling in Tambon Nong Phua Noi.
Pha Taem and Pha Kam are two steep cliffs overlooking the Mekong river with a clear view of Laos on the other side. On the cliff surface there are pre-historic paintingsdating back to 3,000 - 4,000 years.
Soi Sawan Waterfall (inside Pha Taem park), is on highway 2112 at 30 km from Khong Chiam district. The water is plentiful year round. The area is surrounded by trees and flowers.
Thung Na Muang Waterfall (inside Pha Taem park) is on highway 2112 at about 12 km from Soi Sawan fall. It is a beautiful medium size fall near the road.
Saengchan Waterfall (inside Pha Taem park) is only 1 km from Thung Na Muang fall on highway 2112. It is a waterfall down through a rock pipe looking like a full moon shining onto the world. Around the area, large and small rocks are scattered together with many kinds of trees. Below is a cave good for camping.
The Bi-Colored River or the Mun river's alluvium is the place where two rivers: The brown Mekhong and the blue Mun rivers. It is located in Khong Chiam district at about 84 km from Ubon city center.
