                                               Adopting a Pet

Bobby : Mom, all my friends have pets, and we don’t. Could I get
                        a pony?
Mrs. Jenkins :  Of course not. Where would we put it?
Bobby : Well, then, could I bring a kitten home from the city pound?
                        It would save its life.
Mrs. Jenkins : You know perfectly well that your sister is allergic to cats.
                       They give her asthma.
Bobby : What about a puppy?
Mrs. Jenkins :  And who’s going to take care of it? Me, I suppose.
Bobby : No, I am, Mom. I promise I will.
Mrs. Jenkins : You’ll walk it every morning and afternoon, before and after
                        school?
Bobby : Yes, Mom, of course. And I’ll feed it, and play with it, and get
it a flea collar, and everything.
Mrs. Jenkins : And you’ll see it gets housebroken?
          Bobby : I will, Mom. I promise I will.
Mrs. Jenkins : Well, I know what your promise are like. We’ll think about it.

Culture Note
Americans love animals of all kinds. Probably about half of all U.S. households keep at least one pet in the house, a cat, dog, canary, goldfish, etc. It seems that every American boy and girl must have a puppy or a kitten, or both !
A large pet industry has developed to feed and care for these animals, complete with special foods, pet hospitals, schools for dog training, and pet-grooming services. Pet shops are found in every neighborhood, town, and shopping center. In addition, dogs are often used for protection and police work, as seeing-eye dogs for the blind.
