English Village กับการสอนภาษาอังกฤษในเกาหลีใต้

ขณะที่ไทยกำลังเดินหน้าเตรียมพร้อมก้าวเข้าสู่การเป็นประชาคมเอเซียน ซึ่งคุณสมเกียรติ อ่อนวิมล ได้เขียนแสดงความคิดเห็นเอาไว้

กฎบัตรอาเซียนข้อ 34 บัญญัติว่า “The working language of ASEAN shall be English” | “ภาษาที่ใช้ในการทำงานของอาเซียน คือ ภาษาอังกฤษ” 
หมายความว่าประชาชนพลเมืองใน 10 ประเทศอาเซียนจะต้องใช้ภาษาอังกฤษกันมากขึ้น นอกเหนือจากภาษาประจำชาติหรือภาษาประจำถิ่นของแต่ละชาติแต่ละชุมชนเอง เพราะไม่เพียงแต่เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐเท่านั้นที่จะต้องไปมาหาสู่ร่วมประชุมปรึกษา หารือและสื่อสารกัน และไม่เฉพาะนักธุรกิจและคนทำมาค้าขายระหว่างประเทศเท่านั้นที่จะต้องใช้ภาษา อังกฤษในการสื่อสารและการติดต่อธุรกิจระหว่างกัน
แต่ในเมื่อทุกคนที่อยู่ในอาเซียนล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นพลเมืองของอาเซียนด้วยกัน ทุกคน และทุกคนจะต้องไปมาหาสู่ เดินทางท่องเที่ยว ทำความรู้จักคุ้นเคยต่อกัน เรียนรู้ซึ่งกันและกัน และที่สำคัญทุกคนจะต้องเดินทางข้ามพรมแดนเพื่อหางานทำและแสวงหาโอกาสที่ดี กว่าให้กับชีวิต ดังนั้นภาษาอังกฤษจึงเป็นเครื่องมืออันดับหนึ่งสำหรับพลเมืองอาเซียน ในการสื่อสารสร้างสัมพันธ์สู่โลกกว้างของภูมิภาคอาเซียน โลกแห่งมิตรไมตรีที่ขยายกว้างไร้พรมแดน โลกแห่งการแข่งขันไร้ขอบเขตภูมิศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรม
   
ภาษาอังกฤษจึงเป็นภาษาที่สองของชาวอาเซียน เคียงคู่ภาษาที่หนึ่งอันเป็นภาษาประจำชาติของแต่ละคน
   
ส่วนภาษาที่สามของชาวอาเซียนนั้นก็คือภาษาอื่นในอาเซียนภาษาหนึ่งภาษาใดหรือ มากว่าหนึ่งภาษา เช่นภาษามาเลย์ ภาษาอินโดนีเซีย ภาษาจีน ภาษาลาว ภาษาขแมร์ ภาษาเวียดนาม ภาษาพม่า ภาษาฟิลิปปิโน ภาษาฮินดี และ ภาษาทมิฬ นอกจากนั้นยังมีภาษาของประเทศนอกภูมิภาคอาเซียนที่เป็นประเทศคู่เจรจาสำคัญ ของอาเซียนอีกแปดประเทศคือ: จีน ญี่ปุ่น สาธารณรัฐเกาหลี ออสเตรเลีย นิวซีแลนด์ อินเดีย สหรัฐอเมริกา และ รัสเซีย ซึ่งหมายความว่าจะต้องเรียนรู้ภาษาที่นอกเหนือจากภาษาอังกฤษ คือ ภาษาญี่ปุ่น ภาษาเกาหลี ภาษารัสเซีย และภาษาที่ใช้ในอินเดียอีกหลายภาษา (ฮินดี, อูรดู, ทมิฬ, เบงกาลี ฯลฯ)
เนื้อหาตอนนี้ จะพาท่านไปดูการสอนภาษาอังกฤษของประเทศเกาหลี ซึ่งสอนโดยการสร้างเมืองจำลองขึ้นมา และใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในการสื่อสารเท่านั้น

English Village ที่นี่เป็นเมืองจำลองสร้างเลียนแบบเมืองๆ หนึ่งในรัฐ Virginia ของอเมริกา ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในการสื่อสารกันเท่านั้น ห้ามพูดภาษาอื่น
ก่อนอื่น เรามาทำความรู้จักกับประเทศนี้กันก่อน เพราะเมื่อก่อนเขาล้าหลังไทยมาก

ผู้เขียนพร้อมเพื่อน master teacher ที่ได้ทุนจาก สพฐ.เรียนปริญญาโทด้านการสอนภาษาอังกฤษที่มหาวิทยาลัยรามคำแหง ได้มีโอกาสไปทัศนศึกษาที่ gyeonggi english village yangpyeong camp ซึ่งเป็น English village ที่มีมาตรฐานดีที่สุดในเกาหลี เมื่อเทียบกับอีก English village ที่มีเป็นร้อยๆ แห่งในเกาหลี เค้าเปิดแข่งกันเหมือนเปิดร้านอาหารในไทยนั่นแหละค่ะ

ใน English village เหมือนเมืองอีกเมืองหนึ่ง ก่อนเข้าไปต้องมี pasport ด้วยนะคะ

 Gyeonggi English Village which is well-known for its beautiful buildings and hi-Tec facilities.  The camp also was the shooting scene of a Korean drama “Boys over Flowers”!  There are diverse language courses designed for different levels of students and also adults.  Each year, 40 thousand students are trained here without having to go abroad.  They are able to experience international living and learning style, and for those economic inferior students, they are attending the classes under government’s help.  The camp also provides shot-term/two-week training for people from Japan, China, and Russia.
     “Fostering great leaders” is the motto. คติหรืออุดมการณ์ของที่นี่คือ "ส่งเสริมผู้นำที่ยิ่งใหญ่"  In the camp, courses are designed for building students’ global view and communication skills.  The atmosphere here makes learners bathe in total American life style, which might help them to think and to act as native speakers.
 ใน camp จะสร้างบรรยากาศให้ผู้เรียนได้ดูดซับ เอิบอิ่ม และใช้ชีวิตตามแบบอเมริกัน ซึ่งจะช่วยให้พวกเค้าได้คิดและทำแบบชาวอเมริกัน (ถึงอย่างนั้น)
     Under the main purpose of Holistic Education: knowledge, ethics, and health, 9 theme classes are set up for learners, including flight, music, sports, cooking, photo, insects, dominos, sea mammals, and science. 
Students have to take level test before coming, and a passport will be given to them to mark their beginning point.  In the passport, there are tables for students to collect signatures form the foreign teachers after they have passed each task.  Ten golden rules and a reward-warning system are also included so that the students know the limit.  All participants must only speak English at village, and they are also required to study and review before classes!

มีวิชาหลัก 9 วิชาค่ะ คือ 1. การบิน (ไม่ได้สอนให้ขับเครื่องบินนะคะ แต่สอนเกี่ยวกับการสนทนาเมื่อไปสนามบิน การตรวจคนเข้าเมือง การติดต่อกับพนักงานต่างๆ ฯลฯ)
2. ดนตรี แบบอเมริกัน
3. กีฬา แบบอเมริกัน
4. การทำอาหารอเมริกัน 
5. การถ่ายภาพ
6. กีฏวิทยา
7.โดมิโน
8. สัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมในทะเล
9.วิทยาศาสตร์

       All in all, we do have a clearer look at Korea’s attempt to learning English.  The Korean government makes great efforts on pushing this trend, so does ours. However, it is not necessary to say that the Korean experience is much valuable than ours, since their young men (around 20) can’t even take my order for hot coffee in English!  The signs and banners we see on the streets are all in Korean, which is quite impossible for a foreigner to read or recognize, let along to find the right direction!  After all, it’s not friendly enough. 
     In a word, Korean people on the streets don’t speak English. 
     There are same amount of foreign teachers and Korean teachers, and they co-teach in classes.  All activities are renewed every 6 months, so the learners won’t take repeated lessons.  After intensive trainings, an overall evaluation will be taken by the learners, both in oral and written forms.  In order to maintain or even boost up students’ learning interest, as well as not to be afraid of foreigners, short-term trainings are also provided here.    Through well designed programs, such as dormitory English, activity English, theme English, situational English, and drama, learners are truly motivated.  According to their data, there’s an over 80% satisfactory rate!
 
Children who ever attend the 5-day training are eager to come back, for they now understand English is not just a course at school, but a life style! For those who were afraid of speaking up, when they are back to school, they are no longer scared neither frustrated.  Learning English now can be as natural as breathing.  Gradually in the future, students from urban area also have the opportunity to attend English camps and have a total fresh experience.
     A glance at the English teaching and learning situation in Korea helps us to think further and deeper for our own future.  Learning is a life time matter, and to keep the interest from wearing out is an important issue.  We teachers need to bear in mind that no matter how extravagant and fancy the facilities can be, if children lose interest in challenging themselves and exploring all possibilities, everything will be in vain!

น่าสนใจตรงรัฐบาลของเค้าทำให้พลเมืองในชาติ เข้าใจและตระหนักว่า การพูดภาษาอังกฤษเป็น lifestyle ต่างจากคนไทยที่เข้าใจว่า ถ้าเราพูดภาษาอังกฤษจะกลายเป็นคนไม่รักชาติบ้านเมือง ค่านิยมที่ถูกปลูกฝังว่าเราเป็นประเทศที่ไม่เคยเป็นเมืองขึ้นของใคร ทำให้เราหยิ่งผิดที่ผิดทาง ลูกๆ กลับไปบ้าน พูดภาษาอังกฤษกับคนในบ้าน จะมองเป็นการดัดจริต ไม่มีการส่งเสริม(ยกเว้นบ้านที่พ่อแม่มีการศึกษาสูงๆ) แม้แต่อยู่ในโรงเรียน ลองไปพูดกับครูบางคน จะโดนตำหนิกลับมา ทำให้เด็กไทยยังล้าหลังประเทศอื่นๆ ในประชาคมอาเซียนอยู่หลายขุม รอคอยให้ประเทศเพื่อนบ้านแซงหน้าไป ตอนนี้ กระต่าย(ไทย) ขอหลับเอาแรงแย่งกันคอรัปชั้นก่อน เต่า (ลาว,พม่า,เขมร) แซงไปก่อนแล้วกันนะ แล้วจะตามไป
